Prevent and Treat Oral Disease
The skin on the inside of the mouth is called the mucosa. The mucosa should be smooth and coral pink in color. Any change in the appearance of the mucosa could be a warning sign of oral cancer or disease. We recommend performing a monthly oral self-examination because it's easier to treat oral pathologies when detected early.
Oral diseases range from simple canker sores to more serious issues, such as oral cancer. Most changes in your oral cavity will not be serious, but any unusual changes should be examined by your oral surgeon. If Dr. Koshgerian or Dr. Shelton suspect an oral pathology, a biopsy may be performed. After the results from the biopsy are in, your surgeon will discuss the next steps for treatment.
Signs and Symptoms of Oral Pathologies
It is important to remember that pain does not always occur with pathology, particularly in the case of cancer. If you notice any of the following abnormalities in your mouth, please contact The Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego:
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
- A lump or thickening on any part of the mucosa
- A chronic sore throat or hoarseness and/or difficulty chewing or swallowing
